CDs21 Solutions announces
a logo for the "Optical Card"
- For clear distinction of compatible media and drives -
|
CDs21
Solutions (Secretary Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Dr.
Heitaro NAKAJIMA), a voluntary association promoting business
models of various CD standards, will announce a logo (trademark
registration pending) which indicates whether certain media
or hardware comply with the recommended size of the "Optical
Card." This event is in accordance with a previous announcement
made this April on the recommended size (*)
of the Optical Card, and will enable users to easily distinguish
the compatibility of cards and drives, thus providing assurance
in their use. . |
 |
Optical
cards, which are card-type media that can be played back on
CD players and CD-ROM drives, are becoming more common in the
recent years. In addition to sales promotion, which used to
be the main area of application, they are now being used for
commercial products such as game/edutainment software, recordable
media, etc. However, since they do not comply with the CD specification
in terms of size and shape, various types of products currently
exist in the market. Their playback compatibility is not guaranteed,
and there have been some extreme cases where the cards, or sometimes
even the drives have been damaged.
To
resolve such problems, CDs21 Solutions, following discussion
among its member companies, decided upon a recommendable size
for optical cards and announced it this past April. This announcement
of a logo mark is a further measure expected to contribute to
the creation of a user-friendly environment where optical cards
can be used with more assurance, by indicating the media that
conform to the recommended size and corresponding drives as
well.
Following
its previous efforts such as the issuing of the "Notes
of Caution" (*)
in September 2002, and the establishing of the recommended
size in April this year, CDs21 Solutions now intends to actively
promote adoption of the recommended size and logo mark to the
industry in an effort to further expand the optical card business,
as well as make proposals of possible applications. Some examples

CDs21
Solutions' Activities
Various types of compact discs are currently
standardized for the use of audio, video and data, and related
commercial goods are made popular on the global scale. This
proves that CDs are the most widespread medium among all of
optical discs. The reason why CDs have spread so extensively
as this is that the playback function and compatibility are
appropriately secured among the players and drives of different
models and different generations. This owes greatly to the untiring
efforts of the CD associated industry sector.
CDs21
Solutions as a voluntary association was set up in April 2001
through friendly merger of Multimedia CD Consortium and the
Orange Forum, both of which were thus disbanded on the occasion.
It is the largest organization of its kind, a global body existing
across the CD associated business. It is energetically engaged
in various activities to aim at more and more improvement of
compatibility among application products including hardware,
discs, software and contents that are based on different standards.
Its activity further encompasses the promotion and spread of
CD associated services for contribution to the users as well
as for the whole industry sector concerned.
As
of today, CDs21 Solutions has the membership of 70 firms comprising
mainly of optical disk and drive manufacturers.
