Outline of the Orange Forum

Objectives
The Orange Forum was established with the objective of promoting the dissemination of CD-R/RW drives, CD-R/RW discs and related hardware and software products based on standards laid down in the Orange Book. The organization is composed of 57 manufacturing companies.
History
The Orange Forum, an organization founded with the aim of promoting the dissemination of CD-R/CD-RW products and technology, was founded in March 1996. Below, we have listed some of the key events that have transpired from the development of the CD-R in September 1988 up to the present time. The CD-R User Group, which was founded in 1991 and disbanded in 1993, was a volunteer organization, concerned mainly with technology, and worked to resolve problems that arose with regard to media and drive compatibility. As a result of the group's efforts, the Orange Book Part II, Version 2, which provided support for 2x recording, was released in January 1994. In February of the following year, the predecessor of the Orange Forum, the Orange Study Group (OSJ) was established. The objective of the Orange Study Group (OSJ), to propagate the CD-R, was basically the same as the present-day Orange Forum, but its activities were limited due to its status as an unregistered voluntary organization. In the wake of the explosive growth in the CD-R market, in March 1996, the OSJ moved to disband, and the Orange Forum was established. However, to maintain continuity, OSJ is still used as the English name of the Orange Forum. In 1997, the Orange Forum merged with the Yokohama Working Group, an organization which had launched efforts to propagate the CD-RW.
